A Basic practice for beginners
In a world that moves faster every day, our minds often get swept up in stress, worry, and endless to-do lists. Meditation offers a way to pause, breathe, and reconnect even if just for a few minutes. You don’t need special clothes, incense, or hours of free time. You just need a few quiet moments and an open mind.
By focussing on our breathing, we are practicing the ability to intentionally and impartially anchor ourselves in the present moment and learn how to return to it.
Here’s how to get started.
Meditation is essentially the discipline of developing your awareness and attentiveness. It helps you become more grounded, more conscious of your thoughts, and more present without losing yourself in them. Not that you're attempting to "stop thinking." Rather, you're softly directing your focus.
Step-by-Step: How to Meditate
1. Find a Quiet Spot
Sit or lie down somewhere comfortable. You don’t need silence just a space where you won’t be interrupted for a few minutes.
2. Set a Timer (Optional)
Start with 2–5 minutes. It might feel short, but it’s a powerful beginning.
3. Close Your Eyes and Breathe
Inhale slowly through your nose… exhale gently through your mouth. Focus on the rhythm of your breath.
4. Notice When Your Mind Wanders
It will wander. That’s completely normal. When you notice it, just say to yourself, “thinking,” and gently bring your focus back to your breath.
5. End with Kindness
When your time is up, open your eyes slowly. Stretch. Take a moment to thank yourself for showing up.
Tips for Success
Be consistent - A few minutes each day is better than one long session once a week.
Don’t judge yourself - Meditation is practice, not perfection.
Try guided meditations - Apps like Headspace, Calm, or Insight Timer can walk you through the process.
Breathe naturally - No need to force anything. Just observe.
